| Program Summary |
MarketReach America Life
Sciences & Medical Devices 2007 Investor
and Strategic Partner Conference
On July 24-25, 2007, 12 Israeli life science
companies gathered for the fifth MarketReach
America conference, which took place on the Johns
Hopkins University campus in Baltimore, Maryland.
MarketReach is an industry-focused
business development program run by
the Maryland-Israel
Development Center and its representatives
in Israel, The
Trendlines Group.
We are very pleased
that at least one investment
has already closed as a direct result of the
conference and a number of serious, ongoing
discussions are underway between participants and investors
and strategic partners.
Some of the highlights
(in chronological order)
|
 |
A meeting with Dr.
Ed Miller, dean
of the Johns Hopkins University School
of Medicine and with Dr.
Steve Desiderio, head of their Institute
for Basic Biomedical Research, along with
other leading members of the School of
Medicine faculty. Important contacts were
made that are already resulting in discussions
about research and clinical collaboration.
|
 |
A gala banquet in honor of Hanan
Sibel, outgoing chairman of
the Maryland-Israel Development Center,
attended by close to 300 prominent businesspeople
and community leaders. The Israeli representatives
presented their companies to an enthusiastic
audience and were welcomed by Maryland
Governor Martin O'Malley and
Israeli Ambassador Sallai Meridor.
|
 |
A very insightful "insider's" view
of the FDA from a former FDA commissioner,
Dr. Lester Crawford, followed by a panel
of regulatory and reimbursement experts
moderated by Lynn
Shapiro Snyder of Epstein,
Becker & Green. The companies were
warned about foreseeable "bumps" in
their regulatory and reimbursement pathways
that can be avoided (or at least minimized)
with proper planning.
|
 |
A discussion with
representatives from leading life science
companies such as
Medtronic, Becton-Dickinson, MedImmune/AstraZeneca,
and Novation about how to do business with
their companies (and other large companies
like theirs), followed by a very lively
round of one-on-one
meetings between the
companies and the potential strategic partners.
In the true spirit of MarketReach America,
a lot of valuable information and contacts
were conveyed -- even if there was not
direct synergy between a particular Israeli
company and a specific strategic partner.
A number of the companies are still in
contact with the strategic partners, as
their opportunities make their way through
the corporate structure.
|
 |
A very interesting and, at times, humorous
keynote speech from John
Jacobs, Nasdaq
EVP, Financial Products
and Marketing – about raising money
in public markets in general and, of course,
through Nasdaq in particular.
|
 |
Last but not least, the companies
made their presentations to
a gathering of investors that included
VC funds, corporate venture funds, and
angel investors. The presentations were
followed by a networking cocktail
reception, during which investors
approached the companies that interested
them and made arrangements for further
discussions.
