September 2008 Recap of 6th MarketReach America program: MarketReach America Life Sciences & Medical Devices 2008
Here's a short report on MarketReach America 2008, written by Tina Ornstein, CEO of Trendlines International, just after the conference in Baltimore on September 11.
  1. The poster session on Wednesday afternoon was nicely done. Our Israeli companies got some practice networking in a friendly, non-threatening environment.
  2. The reception/dinner on Wednesday evening was also very nice. A big turnout (close to 200 people, including the Israeli delegation), made serious conversations difficult, but the participating Israelis were impressed with the warmth and sincerity of the organizers, speakers, and guests.
  3. Today’s conference took place on the Johns Hopkins University campus. The auditorium was full for the company presentations, which went very well. We had a lot of comments that this was an especially strong delegation and that the presentations were on a high level -- and Trendlines got a lot of credit for the work we did in preparing the companies.
  4. I think there were quite a few meaningful conversations for most of the Israeli companies. But it's possible that there will be other good stories in this department over the coming months.
  5. The one-on-one meetings with potential investors and strategic partners were lively. It seemed that the seeds were being planted for some interesting collaborations, but only time will tell.
  6. The two panels at the end of the day were both very informative. Lynn Shapiro Synder [Senior Member, Health Care and Life Sciences Practice, Epstein Becker & Green] moderated a panel that focused primarily on distribution, with the participation of the head of procurement and distribution at Johns Hopkins (the hospital and the university!) and a representative from Owens & Minor (who also met with a number of the companies during the one-on-one meetings). We all learned an incredible amount.
All in all, it was a good day and the Israeli participants were very complimentary about the quality of the organization -– both in Israel and here in Maryland.

SOME ISRAELI HOMELAND SECURITY FIRMS ARE SPREADING THE WORD AWAY FROM THEIR HOME WITH HELP FROM AMERICA
"The CEOs of five Israel-based companies that produce homeland security technologies are participating in a business development program, sponsored in part by aerospace giant Lockheed Martin, that seeks to help Israeli companies penetrate the American marketplace.

March 2005 "Md. program designed to help Israel homeland security companies"
Joe Bacchus, The Daily Record (March 8, 2005)

Maryland and Israel are starting a year-long homeland security business development program that officials hope will increase the state’s role in the global economy and allow Maryland to reap the benefits of Israel’s technology industry.

The third in a series of business development programs, called MarketReach America, begins today with a reception held by Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. in Annapolis. The program highlights Maryland’s commitment to the development of “new high-tech products,” Ehrlich said in a prepared statement.

The program will bring together business leaders from Maryland and Israel in order to help Israeli technology companies enter the U.S. market.

“This is all about partnerships, and connecting Israeli companies with their Maryland counterparts,” said Henry Fawell, a spokesman for Ehrlich. “This will pay dividends both economically and from a homeland security standpoint.”

This excerpt was taken from the The Daily Record, a publication of the Maryland Department of Business & Economic Development.
